Granada

Remember, madam, that Granada is the most beautiful country in the world; remember that one breathes by day all that the sun extracts from the perfumes of orange, violet, roses and the evergreen and flowery jasmine, and by night all that a blue sky, dotted with millions of stars, can shake of freshness in the ground; that one loses oneself at every step through paths of boxwood, mastic trees and sycamores, through these indentations of which one seems to see the smiling face of God who has blessed this enchanted country; that we have, if we look at Granada from the terraces of the Generalife, to its left, the copper towers of the palace, which Boabdil wept; to its right, the Albaicín and its bohemian nests hidden between aloes and cactus; in front of you, a green and fragrant valley, heading towards a bluish horizon, embellishing a chain of mountains that look like the belt that the jealous Lord placed as a wall around the city, to which its inhabitants gave the shape and name of the sweetest fruit; and finally, behind us, the Sierra Nevada, an immense granite fortress, all crenellated matte and polished silver. All the wonders we had wished for before seeing them, and adore after we have seen them.

Alexandre Dumas - Impressions de voyage: De Paris a Cadix (1847)
